For pond service technicians, a good kayak has become a necessary tool to getting a lot of jobs done. In this article, we will discuss some of the best kayaks for every budget, as well as review some safety tips to help keep you safe not only at work, but in any kayak-related adventure you find yourself in.Â
Kayak Safety Tips
Before we move on to the kayak models, let's review some important kayak safety tips, starting with the most important rule of all; always wear your PFD (Personal Floatation Device). This can save your life if something bizarre or unexpected occurs, and also prevent others from having to search for you should an emergency arise. Check your local laws and make sure the personal flotation device is United States Coast Guard approved.
Cold weather mixed with water can make for a very dangerous situation. If the temperature of the water combined with the temperature of the air is less than 120 degrees, you will risking hypothermia if you capsize. In these cases, wear a wetsuit. By the same token, wearing waders may seem like a good idea, but it is also a good way for water to weigh you down in the event that your kayak flips while you’re servicing a pump.
Another important topic when it comes to working on the water? Hydration. It’s easy to become dehydrated while working, sweating, and paddling around. Staying hydrated on the water can prevent some discomfort and may even help save your life.
Additionally, you'll want to keep an eye on the sun (well, not literally, of course). Not only can the sun exacerbate dehydration and exhaustion, it can cause long lasting damage in the form of skin cancer. Using proper sun protection such as sunscreen, hats, and long sleeve t-shirts can be just as important as using a life jacket if you’re spending long hours in the sun.
The Best Kayaks for Every Budget
When looking for a kayak to do pond service work, you will want to consider storage capacity, weight capacity, and the width/length of the boat. Below, we've listed a few of our favorites from the ever-booming kayak industry.
Ascent 10T Sit On Top Kayak
This kayak has a unique tunnel hull design with a very wide (and therefore stable) deck. This allows for maneuverability and more room for your equipment and tools. Despite its affordable price tag, this kayak features a long list of features to assist you in remaining comfortable and safe throughout your work day.
Perception Outlaw 11.5
The Perception Outlaw 11.5 is an incredible stable platform, featuring a wide open deck with an expansive rear tank well for storage. This keeps your tools and equipment in easy-to-reach and easily manageable areas. This kayak also features a fold up stowaway chair that can be used outside of the kayak as a lawn chair. With a max capacity of 425 pounds, you can take yourself and your most important gear to wherever you need to go.
Perception Pescador 10
This smaller boat offers less storage up front, but more in-hull storage, meaning you can fill this boat with all the necessities you can possibly think of. With a max storage capacity of 325 pounds, you can take yourself and your most important tools and gear from shore to shore. The shorter length than the previously mentioned Outlaw 11.5 means that this kayak is easier to maneuver. It also weighs less, making this a solid choice for anyone working alone.
Lifetime Yukon angler 116
This is a very stable kayak with more storage than you will likely ever need. It weighs in at 78 lbs and has a max weight capacity of 350 lbs. This kayak comes rudder ready to install an aftermarket rudder to help guide you on a windy day. It also features a stand up assist strap to assist in getting in and out of your seat. Finally, the kayak includes in-hull storage as well as a very large rear tank well that can fit a rather large cooler. (Remember to stay hydrated!)
Bonafide RS117
This boat is amazing. With a weight capacity of 425 lbs and an almost 12’ length (11’7”) you can move freely to the bow and stern to get your equipment without issue, as the standing deck is clear and wide. With in-hull storage and a large rear tank well to keep your tools and equipment, this boat is in our opinion not only very a pretty kayak, but a top-of-the-line contender for pond service technicians.
